Hindi belongs to the Indo-European language family that dates back to 8th century CE. It is also a lingua franca in Northern India and is widely spoken in major cities. Hindi has numerous dialects, broadly categorized into Eastern and Western Hindi. It is written in Devanagari script. It is the third most spoken language in the world after English and Mandarin.

• Population- 602.2 million Hindi speakers worldwide. This includes both native and second language speakers.
• Geographical Distribution: one of the 22 scheduled languages in India ( spoken majorly in north and central India). Apart from India, it is spoken in other countries like Nepal, Mauritius, the United States, the United Kingdom, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname and South Africa.
